A roundup of 8 apps to help you travel smarter

Ask yourself or your friends, would you rather lose your phone or your wallet, and I promise you, most people would say their wallet. Even me! So, why not make these phones that we spend 100s of pounds/dollars on work for us? As a traveller, travel apps are essential to help you travel smarter not harder! With a few apps, I’ve been able to book flights, hotels, connect with loved ones, get around and much more! Now I’m not recommending having your face buried in your phone when you’re exploring but apps can actually help you travel smarter and here are 8 apps to help you do just that!
TRAVEL APP FOR SMARTER COMMUNICATION- Google Translate
I love Google Translate, such a lifesaver! It’s so helpful when you don’t speak 6 different languages fluently. You can translate Voice (Record your voice or another person to translate), Text (type words or sentences in to translate), Photo (Take a pic of a menu or sign for translation). The best part, it is FREE.com!
What’s smart about this app? A couple of things! One, you can use it offline! All you need to do is download the language of the country you’ll be visiting so you can use it without WiFi or data! Two, you can save what you translate to refer to it later! So if there’s something you see a lot, you don’t have to keep translating, just look back!

TRAVEL APPS FOR SMARTER ORGANISATION- App in the Air
Ever wanted a personal assistant to track all your travel but can’t afford one (like me lol)? Then you need App In The Air. It collects all your flight details in one place and all you need to do is connect it to your email address and it grabs all that info out! It shows how long until you need to check-in, where to charge your phone, how long the wait is for security and check-in, flight status, boarding passes, the list goes on! I don’t think there is anything this app doesn’t do to help you travel smarter, honestly!
What’s smart about this app? EVERYTHING! This is one of the great apps that help you travel smarter. Oh, there’s more, if you have an Apple Watch you can use this app on it. So if you’re juggling a million bags in the airport, it’s super convenient! I’m going to be using it from now on so join me!

TRAVEL APPS FOR SMARTER ORGANISATION- Blay
Blay is a great app for frequent, solo or business travellers that helps keep everything in one place! Just put in your flight data and it stores it on your feed. So, you can easily and quickly scan through to see all your flights, get the most accurate global flight status and it even has plug socket information of your destination.
What’s smart about this app? The Android version has airport maps (the first time the android gets something better than iPhone lol) with over 50 indoor airport maps.

[Download Free, iOS]
TRAVEL APPS FOR GETTING AROUND SMARTER- Grab
Grab is basically the South East Asia’s version of Uber and it’s available in most countries in SE Asia. I’ve been once to SE Asia but I didn’t know about this app then and if I did, getting round in taxis would’ve been MUCH easier. You can also hire a driver for longer periods from 2 hrs to 8 hrs, get a motorbike and more depending on the region.
What’s smart about this app? It allows you to pay in cash which is super helpful and also you can set your destination and find out the rate in advance which removes bartering (especially if you’re not great at it).
[Free on iOS or Google Play]
CURIOUS ABOUT 9 MUST HAVE TRAVEL APPS THAT YOU’LL ACTUALLY USE, YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT HERE!
TRAVEL APP FOR BEING YOUR OWN TOUR GUIDE- Google Lens
I think this is a really cool idea, it’s sorta like Google Translate but for objects! I love walking tours and local tour guides are invaluable but maybe this is your third time in the same city and you don’t really want to get a guide or maybe you’ve walked past countless buildings and wondered what they are. Then, you’ll love Google Lens.
This is another one of the great apps to help you travel smarter. Once you have the app open, just point your phone at the building, art installation, even flower and Google Lens will search and tell you the name and information about it. Only issue, you need WiFi or data to use it but you can take a picture and search later.
What’s smart about this app? You never miss a thing! Keeps you informed on the world around you at the drop with one tap.

[Free on Google Play]
TRAVEL APP FOR LONG LAYOVERS-Day Use
Ever had a long layover but you didn’t want to explore or just sit in the airport staring at the window? Dayuse has over 5,000 hotels in 23 countries that you can book during the day for a few hours and for 75% cheaper than the price of an average overnight stay! You get access to all the amenities that the hotel offers and depending on your booking, you can cancel for free up until the beginning of your time slot starts. Check out their website for the list of countries they operate in.
What’s smart about this app? It gives you the opportunity to take advantage of hotels for the duration you need them at a discounted price.

[Free on App Store or Google Play]
TRAVEL APP FOR AIRPORT LOUNGES- LoungeBuddy
This is an app I wish I had on my last trip to Amsterdam because I got to the airport a little early and couldn’t figure out if there was a lounge I could pay for to pass the time. With LoungeBuddy you can find lounges that let anyone in for a fee and you can find out what’s inside like food, drink, if there are showers (if you need one). You can also add your credit card access on it too.
What’s smart about this app? You have access to air lodges at the tip of your fingers without trekking the entire length to the airport to find them. Working smart not hard.

[Free, only on iOS]
TRAVEL APP FOR OVERCOMING JETLAG- Timeshifter
Jetlag, ugh, the absolute ghetto! Most people get jetlag when they travel to a place with different time unless you’re @theufuoma lol. I’ve been able to keep jetlag to a minimum by sleeping on flights and training my body. But if you’re still struggling, you should consider the Timeshifter app. Now, this app right here was developed by world-renowned scientists to help reduce jet lag, so it’s not a joke ting! You create your own personalised plan with details like your age, regular sleeping patterns and more.
It’s not a free app but you get your first plan free so give it a try if jetlag is a real issue for you and if you love it, pay for it!
What’s smart about this app? I mean! its using technology to best or reduce jetlag, that’s as smart as it gets!

[Download free, Android and iOS. First jet-lag plan is free, the second is $10 or you can enjoy unlimited plans for a year for $25.]

Some great app recommendations here!
I especially love the idea of Google Lens, this would be such a useful tool when exploring a city on your own. Shame it’s not available on iPhone 🙁
Thank you! I’m glad you found it great. Google Lens looks awesome right!!! Hopefully it will make it to iOS, fingers crossed!
